Mumbai: India limited-overs team vice-captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday (March 31) donated Rs 80 lakh to help the country fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Mumbai batsman took to his Twitter account to announce that he has donated Rs 45 lakh to ‘Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund’ (PM CARES Fund), Rs 25 lakh to Maharashtra chief minister’s relief fund, Rs 5 lakh each to Zomato Feeding India and for the welfare of stray dogs.

Rohit urged every Indian to get behind the leaders of the nation and support them. “We need our country back on feet & the onus is on us. I’ve done my bit to donate 45lakhs to #PMCaresFunds, 25lakhs to #CMReliefFund Maharashtra, 5lakhs to @FeedingIndia and 5lakhs to #WelfareOfStrayDogs.Let’s get behind our leaders and support them  @narendramodi @CMOMaharashtra (sic),” Rohit wrote on his Twitter page.

On Saturday (March 28), Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that PM CARES Fund was set up. He had tweeted about it and citizens started donating after that with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar leading the way with Rs 25 crore donation.

“People from all walks of life expressed their desire to donate to India’s war against COVID-19. Respecting that spirit, the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund has been constituted. This will go a long way in creating a healthier India,” PM Modi had tweeted.
