FollowIn a strange incident in Vijayawada, a wife attempted suicide by jumping into the canal after she lost her temper angry with her husband for not accompanying her to a film. The husband jumped in after her to rescue though he could not swim. A police constable passing by jumped in and brought them to safety.
According to details, the incident took place when 19-year-old Tirupatamma and her husband of four months Raja Reddy (20) belonging to Vambay Colony were on a stroll in the city on Sunday.
Tirupatamma requested her husband to take her to watch a film but Raja Reddy refused her wish. Angered by his rejection, Tirupatamma jumped into the nearby Eluru canal. Raja Reddy shocked by this sudden turn of events jumped in after his wife though he could not swim.
An APSP constable Srinivasa Rao, on his way to duty, saw the drowning couple and immediately rushed to their assistance. He jumped into the canal and brought them to safety. Both the wife and husband are safe. Srinivasa Rao earned the appreciation of the people and the police officials for his heroic deed.
Joint Commissioner of Police BV Ramana Kumar patted Srinivasa Rao for showing courage and saving two lives. He appreciated Srinivasa Rao and handed over reward. Later, the couple were given counselling.
