The Vatican police busted a drug fuelled gay sex orgy at a top priest's apartment near the city. This is the latest scandal to have hit the Vatican.

The police reportedly entered the flat in June after receiving complaints from neighbours, who alleged that they witnessed unusual behaviour from visitors at night. The police added that they saw drugs and a group of men engaged in sexual activity when they entered the apartment.

So far, the priest's name hasn't been revealed but it is believed that he served as a secretary to Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, who is a personal adviser to the Pope. The flat belongs to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which investigates sexual abuses committed by clerics. According to reports, these flats are usually reserved for senior curial officers, suggesting that the priest exerted influence among high ranking officers in the Vatican.

Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reported that the priest was taken to a hospital to detox his body from the drugs he had consumed. Following this, the police arrested him, perhaps on drug charges as gay sex is legal in Vatican City. However, he's currently residing in a monastery in Italy.

The publication claimed that the priest was due for a promotion. The cardinal had recommended him for the post of a Bishop but this could be put on hold in light of this incident. According to International Business TImes, the priest already has two sexual abuse cases pending against him.

The Holy Office has been at the centre of a number of controversies. Recently, Vatican's finance chief, Cardinal George Pell was taken away by police authorities when he touched down in Australia. The Cardinal is being tried for sexual assault which he allegedly committed when he was a senior cleric in the country.
