Chennai: With the COVID-19 cases in the city continuing to be on the decline, the Southern Railway has permitted all women passengers to travel in Chennai suburban EMU trains from today without any time restrictions on all the days of the week.

Similarly, children up to 12 years of age accompanying women passengers would also be permitted to travel, a Railway release said here on Sunday.

So far, women commuters, not working in the essential services sector, have been allowed to travel only during non-peak hours in view of Covid-19.

Suburban trains in Chennai Beach- Chengalpet– Kanchipuram/Thirumalpur-Arakkonam resumed on December 14. This will benefit a large number of office-goers and other commuters travelling from the vicinity of Kancheepuram and Arakkonam.

Southern Railway is expanding the scope of passengers, who are allowed to travel, in the Chennai suburban train system in a phased manner.

It also appealed to all the commuters using suburban train services to follow all the COVID-19 protocols issued by the Central and State governments.
