The Trinamool Congress  (TMC) on Monday (August 16) observed ‘Khela Hobe’ Divas across West Bengal and CM Mamata Banerjee attended a football match at Salt Stadium in Kolkata.

Party leaders say the day aims at at promoting sports and as a mark of respect to 16 people who had died in a stampede during a football match in Kolkata on this day in 1980.

CM Mamata had said one lakh footballs would be distributed to mark the Khela Hobe day. She had also emphasised that Khela Hobe will now go national, as her party is looking to spread its influence in other states ahead of the 2024 Assembly polls.

Meanwhile, events have been organised all over Bengal: from Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata to small grounds in the other districts. All state ministers and party leaders along with the cadre, are taking part in the celebrations today.

The BJP has opposed the 'Khela Hobe Divas', claiming that the Muslim League had launched its Direct Action Day and began the Great Calcutta Killings in 1946 on August 16.

The saffron party has decided to observe the day as 'Paschimbongo Bachao Divas' (Save West Bengal Day).
