As many as 43 ministers of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, including 19 ministers of state, took the oath office at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata in the presence of governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in a simple ceremony, keeping in mind the raging coronavirus pandemic.

The West Bengal Council of Ministers included a mix of party veterans and new faces, Senior TMC leaders like Subrata Mukherjee, Partha Chatterjee, Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas and Sashi Panja, who have held important portfolios in the first two terms of the Trinamool Congress, were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers.

Eight women were sworn in during the day, and with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the total number of women in the new TMC govt has touched nine.

The Council of Ministers includes seven members of the minority community, the key names being Siddiqullah Chowdhury and Gholam Rabbani.

While former finance minister Amit Mitra took oath via video conferencing.

A total of 17 new faces, including former cricketer Manoj Tiwary, are among the 43 TMC leaders who were inducted into Banerjee's cabinet. This includes 24 cabinet ministers, 10 Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 9 Ministers of State.

On May 5, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took charge as the Chief Minister of the state for the third consecutive term.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, TMC secured a third term with a thumping majority. On Sunday, the Election commission counted votes for the Assembly elections, the ruling Trinamool Congress came out winning 213 of the 292 assembly seats.

Though the TMC has won with a thumping majority in the recently held assembly election, Banerjee herself lost from Nandigram and she too needs to win a bypoll.
