Van-truck collision at highway in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool claims 14 lives, 4 seriously injured

Fourteen people including 8 women, five men and a child died on the spot and four others including two children sustained grievous injuries.

Kurnool/Amaravati: At least 14 people were killed and four others were critically injured, when a tempo traveller van which they were travelling in collided with a truck on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway (NH-44) in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

The incident took place at 3.30 am near Madarpur village in Veldurti Mandal of Kurnool district and Local police said that a group of pilgrims from Madanapalle region in Chittoor district were going to Ajmer in Rajasthan.

The mini-van in which the pilgrims were travelling in veered off the road and rammed into a truck on the other side of the road.

Fourteen people including 8 women, five men and a child died on the spot and four others including two children sustained grievous injuries.

While 14 people died on the spot, four children sustained serious injuries. The panic-stricken truck driver shouted for help following which locals assisted in pulling the injured out of the van. “The bodies of the deceased were mutilated beyond recognition,” the Veldurthi police said.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the incident. He called up district collector G Veerapandian and superintendent of police Fakeerappa to take up rescue operations immediately.

Traffic along the national highway came to a complete standstill following the mishap as it took a lot of time for the police to remove the accident vehicles in the dark.
