Uttarakhand flash flood: CM Rawat releases Rs 20 crores from SDRF for relief operation

As relief and rescue operation continues, Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat conducted review meeting on disaster relief operation following glacier burst in Chamoli and released Rs 20 crores from State Disaster Response Fund for the same.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah interacted with Uttarakhand MPs, discussing relief efforts and future course of action over Uttarakhand glacier disaster.

The Jharkhand government shared helpline numbers for the people of the state stranded in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. Chief minister Hemant Soren tweeted a picture of the official announcement.

Rescue operations have been intensified in Chamoli’s bigger tunnel and several are trapped. A joint team of ITBP, Army, SDRF and NDRF has entered the Tapovan tunnel in Chamoli for recce, said ITBP.

“Recce party with victim locating camera and sniffer dog tried to enter but due to slush, but after 100 meters it was not possible to proceed ahead. Machines are now clearing the heavy slush ahead."

Fourteen people were confirmed dead on Monday after the Nandadevi glacier broke in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on February 7, washing away houses near the Dhauliganga river, officials said. Over 150 people are feared dead in the state after the massive flash flood triggered by a glacial outburst devastated part of the state, with raging floodwaters even washing away two hydropower stations.

Hundreds of Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel, Indian Army, SDRF and NDRF have been deployed for rescue operations. Water sports and activities have been stopped in Rishikesh and Haridwar is on flood alert.
