Uttarakhand: At least 13 killed in road accident in Chakrata, several injured as utility bus falls into ditch

According to a statement issued by the SDRF, the incident took place on the Tyudi road under the Chakrata area. The utility bus was going from Baila village of Bharam Khat to Vikasnagar in Chakrata.

At least 13 people were killed and four others injured in Chakrata, Uttarakhand on Sunday after a utility bus they were travelling in fell into a ditch in Dehradun. Rescue operations commenced immediately after news of the accident spread.

The police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are present at the spot and a rescue operation is underway with the help of local residents. Satendra Bhati, the station house officer of Chakrata, said that as of now, 13 bodies have been recovered from the spot. "Their bodies were taken out from the accident site with the help of local villagers who were the first to reach there," he said. “As it is a very remote area, rescue personnel are facing difficulties in reaching the spot, which is about 300 ft deep adjacent to the road.”

ANI news agency reported that the accident occurred on the Bulhad-Baila road of the tehsil and the state disaster management (SDM) unit of Chakrata rushed to the spot along with police officials. A company of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was also deployed to carry out the rescue efforts, the agency reported.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami condoled the demise of people in a road accident at Bulhad-Baila road in Chakrata, Dehradun district. He has also asked the District Administration to make the relief and rescue operation quick and provide immediate medical aid to the injured.

In a tweet today, Dhami said, “My condolences to those who died in the heart-rending road accident on Bulhad-Baila road in the Chakrata area. May God give peace to the soul of the deceased and strength to the families to bear the loss.”

The Chief Minister further said, “The district administration has been directed to expedite the rescue and relief operations and provide immediate treatment to the injured.”
