A cylinder blast in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district has killed 7 people and injured 7 others on Tuesday night. The explosion also led to the collapse of two adjacent houses at Tikri village in the Wazirganj area.

Rescue efforts are on to trace one person possibly trapped under the rubble. The injured are being treated at a hospital.

The blast happened in Tikri village while one of the families was cooking last night. 15 people were trapped under the debris of the collapsed houses, which were adjacent to each other, out of which seven died.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief over the deaths and directed officials to ensure best possible treatment for the injured and help to the family of the deceased. He also asked for a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the blast.

Gonda police chief (SP) Santosh Kumar Mishra said the incident occurred at Thatherkapurwa locality under Wazirganj police station limits at around 11.30 pm on Tuesday.

He said locals ran out of their houses after hearing the sound of the blast and helped pull out survivors and bodies from under the rubble before rushing them to a local hospital. Seven were declared brought dead while seven others were undergoing treatment.

"We received a call about a cylinder blast that made the roof collapse. With the help of the police force and local people we started rescue operations. 14 people have been rescued, seven of them have been declared dead and seven others are undergoing treatment at a hospital," Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Mishra said.

Heavy force has been deployed to the incident site and the forensic team is probing the cause of the blast. IG Devipatan Range, Superintendent of Police, ASP and personnel from several police stations are currently on the spot.
