Twitter was at the receiving end of the stick on Friday as the parliamentary panel on information technology pulled up the platform's officials over its policies.

According to information trickling in from the parliamentary panel meeting, Twitter officials have been told in equivocal terms that the rule of land was supreme and not its policies.

Sources said that the Committee was miffed after Twitter officials -- in response to a query on whether Twitter India followed the law of the land -- told it that the platform followed its own policies.

Sources also said that Twitter representatives were told to submit in writing about their designations in Twitter India and how much executive authority they had to take important policy decisions.

Twitter India officials were summoned by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology, chaired by Tharoor, last week to respond on issues related to misuse of the platform and protection of citizens' rights.

Friday's developments are bound to complicate matters for Twitter, especially after the micro-blogging site lost its intermediary status for failing to comply with new IT rules.
