The miseries of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh mounted on Friday as the Enforcement Directorate carried out fresh raids at 3 locations in Nagpur.

The searches are being carried out in connection with its probe into a money laundering case.

Earlier this week, the former minister skipped the summons and failed to appear before the ED again in connection with its probe in the case. Deshmukh sent a 2-page letter to the ED through his advocate and mentioned that he is sending his representative.

An ED official in the probe team had told news agency IANS, Deshmukh has skipped summons and has sent a two-page letter to the agency through his advocate,

This was the third time Deshmukh skipped ED summons in connection with the case.

Anil Deshmukh was summoned under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as the agency wants to record his statement further in the case.

Earlier, on July 30, a Supreme Court bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Krishna Murari and V Ramasubramanian denied to grant him interim relief from arrest. Seeking to quash the ED case, Deshmukh had argued that the proceedings against him are "malafide".

In its probe, the ED had claimed that it found that Deshmukh, while was the Home Minister of Maharashtra, with dishonest intention has received illegal gratification of approximately Rs 4.70 crore in cash from various orchestra bar owners, through (suspended) Sachin Waze, then the assistant police inspector of Mumbai Police.

Anil Deshmukh has denied any wrongdoing, while his lawyers have called the ED action against him unjustified.
