Srinagar: At least three unidentified terrorists were killed in an encounter that broke out in the Pulwama district on Thursday evening in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama, the police said on Friday. A search operation is underway.

"Three unidentified terrorists killed in the encounter at Pulwama. Incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, was recovered. Search going on," J&K Police said.

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Kakapora area of the south Kashmir district after inputs of the presence of terrorists there, officials said.

The operation turned into an encounter when the terrorists retaliated with gunfire, he added.

A top police officer had earlier confirmed that “an encounter started between the security forces and the terrorists at Ghat Mohalla Kakpora area of Pulwama district”

He said, “A joint search team of J&K Police, Army’s 50 RR and the CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of terrorists in the area. As the team cordoned off the suspected spot and asked terrorists to surrender repeatedly, they fired upon the search party and fire was retaliated resulting in an encounter.”

The terrorists were involved in the attack on BJP leader Anwar Khan's residence in Jammu and Kashmir's Nowgam. One policeman was killed in the attack.

The BJP leader was safe, according to the police official. The terrorists had fired upon the guard post of Kahn's residence at the Arigam area of Nowgam in the outskirts of the city on Thursday morning.
