Tamil Nadu: Partially vaccinated teachers, professors can return to schools, colleges, says Health Minister
The minister said around 90% of teachers and 89% of non-teaching staff in Tamil Nadu had got at least the first dose.
As schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu are set to reopen on September 1, teachers and college professors can return to work if they are vaccinated with their first Covid vaccine dose, said Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian.
The minister said around 90% of teachers and 89% of non-teaching staff in Tamil Nadu had got at least the first dose. “We have instructed district health officers to give priority to vaccinate college teachers, students and other staff. There are around 122 government, government-aided and private colleges in Chennai. The health department asked all the college principals to vaccinate their staff.”
The minister also urged all students who are eligible to get vaccinated at the earliest, while launching a vaccination drive for teachers in the state.
The district health officers are also prioritising vaccination to teachers, college professors and non-teaching staff.
The government has accelerated vaccination in 122 colleges in Chennai including government, government-aided, private colleges and all concerned principals have been briefed upon the guidelines, said the minister.
The Tamil Nadu health department issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that schools and colleges must follow when they reopen on September 1.
According to the SOP, classes must be sanitised regularly, while not more than 20 students should be housed in a room and all meetings, assemblies, gatherings and Physical Education periods during school hours have been disallowed.
The state has so far received 3.11 crore vaccine doses and has 17 lakh doses in stock. On Monday, 9,09,640 Covishied doses are expected to be made available for Tamil Nadu, the minister said.
