A day after the Election Commission announced the dates for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has sealed its seat-sharing agreement with the Pattali Makkal Katchi.

As per the deal, the AIADMK has given the Vanniyar-dominated PMK 23 seats for the April 6 assembly election.

An AIADMK-PMK tie-up for the forthcoming assembly elections comes after a gap of two decades. The PMK has no MLA in the 234-member assembly.

The seat-sharing pact was finalised during a meeting that was attended by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and PMK chief G K Mani and the party's youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss.

The 23 constituencies that the AIADMK has allotted to the PMK will be known in a few days. To note, PMK has a strong vote base in the northern districts of the state.

Before the election Model Code of Conduct came into force, the Tamil Nadu government cleared 10.5 per cent reservation for the Vanniyar community in educational institutions and in the appointment to posts in government services.
