Terming the law and order situation in West Bengal as extremely alarming, state Governor Jagdeep Dhankar has summoned the state chief secretary to brief him on June 7 about the steps taken to contain post-poll violence.

Governor Dhankar on Sunday said that rampant vandalism and hooliganism had resulted in large scale arson, loot and destruction of property. He claimed that people are suffering targetted violence for daring to vote against the ruling dispensation.

Asserting that all elements of a police state are amply reflected, the Governor claimed that democratic values have been openly shredded and trampled upon by the ruling Trinamool Congress goons.

The Governor also alleged that the police has been engaged as an extension of the ruling dispensation to let loose vindictiveness on political opponents.

The Governor's strong remarks come amidst reports of violence across several parts of West Bengal after the results of the assembly elections were declared on May 2.

Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that nine of its party workers have been killed in the post-poll violence. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has denied the allegations.
