Spiritual leader Sadhguru on Wednesday triggered a tweet storm on the micro-blogging site Twitter seeking to draw attention to the distressing state of temples in Tamil Nadu and take forward his campaign to free temples in the state from government control.

Sending a strong message to the state government and political parties, Sadhguru fired off 100 Twitter posts, which he said were not meant to "browbeat anybody, but just out of deep pain and anguish."

Sadhguru started his campaign after he learnt about the deterioration and suffocation of glorious Tamil traditions at temples that were under government control.

Statistics produced before the Madras High Court state that the nearly 12,000 temples out of the 44,121 temples under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department have no revenue to perform even one daily puja.

The tweets include pictures and videos shared by devotees from all over Tamil Nadu, documenting the neglect and dilapidation of what were once magnificent citadels of the Tamil ethos.

Sadhguru said, "It is heartrending to see these great works of art, the very Soul of Tamil Culture, the very Heart of the Tamil People, the very source of the Devotion which has nurtured this land, nurtured this language, nurtured our arts and crafts...everything! Everything that is Tamil is rooted in devotion, and the fulcrum of this devotion is Temple. Today, seeing them in such a pathetic state, where thousands of them are in ruins, unattended to, and others moving in that direction; it is time these temples are freed."

The tweet storm has received overwhelming support from all strata of society, including celebrities like Kangana Ranaut, Raveena Tandon, Mouni Roy, Sri Divya, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Mohan Das Pai and Virendra Sehwag.
