The Trinamool Congress has written to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding the removal of Tushar Mehta from the post of Solicitor General of India. A TMC delegation also called upon the President seeking this.

In its letter, the Trinamool Congress alleged serious impropriety on the part of the Solicitor General of India when he met Suvendu Adhikari, who is Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly and is an accused in the Narada sting case and the Saradha chit fund case.

The TMC cited videos and photos of Suvendu meeting Tushar Mehta at the latter's official residence.

"Such a meeting, between one of the highest-serving law officers of India -- the Solicitor General, who is also appointed as Special Public Prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation -- and an accused person being investigated by the same agency, raises serious doubts of impropriety," the TMC said in its letter.

Calling it a blatant conflict of interest, the ruling party claimed that such a meeting makes a total mockery of the criminal justice system in the country and would only serve to destroy the common man's faith in the judiciary.

The party sought an investigation into the Solicitor General's conduct and demanded that he step down till the probe is over.

"The sanctity of the office of Solicitor General of India cannot be seen to be compromised," the party said.

Solicitor General of India denies meeting Suvendu

Tushar Mehta, who represents the CBI in the two cases, denied meeting with Adhikari, saying he "dropped in unannounced" last week.

While Tushar Mehta did admit that Adhikari came to his residence-cum-office unannounced, he said that he told his staff to inform the BJP leader of his inability to meet him.
