PM Narendra Modi launched the much-awaited National Vehicle Scrappage policy on Friday and said that the policy is a significant milestone in India's development journey.

PM Modi tweeted and wrote, “The launch of Vehicle Scrappage Policy today is a significant milestone in India’s development journey. The Investor Summit in Gujarat for setting up vehicle scrapping infrastructure opens a new range of possibilities. I would request our youth & start-ups to join this programme.”

“Vehicle scrapping will help phase out unfit & polluting vehicles in an environment friendly manner. Our aim is to create a viable #circulareconomy & bring value for all stakeholders while being environmentally responsible.,” he wrote further.

During the launch, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said that Vehicle Scrappage Policy is based on fitness and not the age of vehicles.

He added, materials extracted from scrapped vehicles will increase supply of raw material at lower cost.

The policy aims to create an ecosystem to phase out unfit and polluting vehicles in an environmentally friendly and safe manner. It intends to make scrapping infrastructure within the sort of Automated Testing Stations and Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities across the country.
