New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed the prevailing Covid-19 situation in Indian and the European Union.

During their phone call, the two leaders also discussed about the measures being undertaken to arrest the spread of virus.

“PM Modi expressed his appreciation of the EU and its Member States for mobilizing quick support for India’s fight against the second wave of Covid-19,” the Prime Minister Office said in a statement.

The development assumes significance as India and the EU will hold their Leaders’ Meeting in virtual format on May 8.

The leaders agreed that the meeting would be an important opportunity to provide renewed momentum to the already multi-faceted India-EU relationship.

The India-EU Leaders’ Meeting will be the first meeting in the EU+27 format and reflects the shared ambition of both sides for further strengthening the India-EU Strategic Partnership.

They also noted that the India-EU Strategic Partnership was witnessing a renewed momentum since the last Summit in July.

On May 4, PM Modi will hold a Virtual Summit with his British counterpart Boris Johnson, wherein a comprehensive roadmap 2030 will also be unveiled.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also undertaken his London visit from May 3-6 to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting, at which India has been invited as a guest country.

“He will thereafter undertake a bilateral visit to the UK,” the ministry said.

As part of international help, the European Union assistance have poured in for India's fight against the Covid-19 crisis. The member states have helped New Delhi with oxygen, medicine and essential equipment.
