Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday to review the Covid-19 situation and the vaccination programme amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

Senior officers including the cabinet secretary, principal secretary to the PM, the health secretary and Niti Aayog member, Dr Vinod Paul are attending the meeting.

"Prime Minister is taking a high-level meeting now to review the Covid-related issues and vaccination happening in the country. All senior officers including Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary to PM, Health Secretary, Dr Vinod Paul are participating in the meeting," sources informed news agency ANI.

The meeting comes in the wake of the country recording an explosive 93,249 new Covid-19 infections, the highest tally recorded since September 19.

This is the biggest daily rise in cases since September 19, when 93,337 fresh infections were recorded. The death toll climbed to 1,64,623 on Sunday with 513 new fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed.

With the present rise in cases, India thus, has once again become the worst Covid-affected country in the world, leaving behind the United States of America and Brazil.
