New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired the 13th BRICS Summit for the second time and urged the member nations to ensure it yields more results in 15 years.

BRICS is a grouping of five fast-emerging economies of the world that includes, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Thanking them for the cooperation extended to India during its chairship, Prime Minister Modi in his opening remarks said, “Despite COVID situation this year, over 150 BRICS meetings and events were organised. Of these, over 20 were ministerial-level. We tried to expand BRICS agenda. BRICS achieved many firsts this year.”

“Our Water Resources Ministers will meet in BRICS format for the first time in November,” he said.

“The theme selected by India for the duration of its chairship is 'BRICS @ 15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus’. These 4 Cs are basic principles of our BRICS partnership,” the prime minister said.

The BRICS also celebrating its 15 years of foundation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said in the last 15 years, “our 5 nations enhanced strategic communication and political trust in spirit of openness, inclusiveness and equality, respected each other's social system, development and explored sound way for nations to interact with each other.”

“We have made solid progress in various areas of cooperation in spirit of pragmatism, innovation and win-win cooperation. We have supported multilateralism and taken part in global governance in spirit of equity, justice and mutual assistance,” the Chinese president said.

PM Modi and President Xi met for the second time in virtual format, ever since the border standoff began along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh in May 2020. The two leaders last met in November 2020.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “Our collected response to Covid-19 has demonstrated what can be achieved when we work together. As BRICS countries we must continue to safeguard our people's lives, livelihoods, support global economic recovery and enchance resilience of public systems.”

Talking about Covid-19 vaccines, he said, “We must also ensure equal access to Covid-19 vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics. This is the only way in which we can respond to this pandemic that engulfs the world.”

Stating that the BRICS cooperation is in demand as the situation around the world is quite turbulent, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “The withdrawal of US forces and its allies from Afghanistan has led to a new crisis, and it's still unclear how this will affect global and regional security. It is for good reason that our countries have paid special attention to this issue.”
