Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that August 14 would be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

In a series of posts on Twitter, Prime Minister Modi said, "Partition's pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day."

The Prime Minister further highlighted that the day should keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.

The Partition of India has been one of the most defining events in the subcontinent's history.  It was the largest unplanned migration in human history and up to 20 million people were affected. The horrors of Partition haunt many to this day.

The borders of Pakistan were drawn up and established two days after the Partition (August 17).

There were killings and atrocities on both sides of the border in communal clashes.
