MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft crashes in Punjab; pilot killed

The crash happened in Langeana village of Moga while the aircraft was on a routine sortie.

A MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed last night near Moga in Punjab. The pilot, Squadron Leader Abhinav Choudhary, lost his life in the crash. 

The crash happened in Langeana village of Moga while the aircraft was on a routine sortie.

In a tweet, IAF said, "There was an aircraft accident last night involving a Bison aircraft of IAF in the western sector. The pilot, Sqn Ldr Abhinav Choudhary, sustained fatal injuries. IAF condoles the tragic loss and stands firmly with the bereaved family." 

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Moga SP (HQ) Gurdeep Singh said, "The pilot body was found 2-km away from the accident site after a search of 4 hours. The parachute was found open and SOS was also sent from his device."

The aircraft had taken off from Suratgarh airbase in Rajasthan for Jagraon (in Ludhiana) for night training purposes. 

When he was returning back to his base, the accident happened near Moga.
