Congress leader Rahul Gandhi among other Opposition leaders on Friday reached Jantar Mantar near Parliament in Delhi and extended support to farmers’ agitation and took part in the ongoing ‘Kisan Sansad’ (farmers’ parliament).

The Opposition leaders held placards 'Save Farmers, Save India' and raised slogans against the Central government.

Nearly 200 farmers have been camping at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for the ‘Kisan Sansad’ since the ongoing Parliament monsoon session began on July 22. It is an extension of the months-long agitation they have been holding along Delhi borders seeking a repeal of three Central farm laws.

Meanwhile, TMC, BSP and AAP did not participate in the Opposition’s protest against farm laws.

Earlier in the day, the AAP said it will join the protests led by Mallikarjun Kharge. According to news agency ANI, AAP MP Sushil Kumar Gupta said, if the Opposition’s protest is led by a party leader like Rahul Gandhi, then, why would we go? He hasn’t been successful in raising farmers’ issues.

Thousands of farmers protesting against the farm laws marched to the national capital in November last year to intensify their agitation. The farmers have been stationed at some border points of Delhi since then, refusing to leave until the government withdraws the laws.

The farmers fear the laws will pave way for the end of the Minimum Support Price system - the central procurement regime which assures guaranteed prices for certain crops.

The government has repeatedly tried to assuage the farmers' concerns, saying that MSP-based procurement will continue.
