NIRF Rankings 2021: IIT Madras tops in overall category, IISc Bangalore country’s best research institute

IIT Madras has created a history for becoming the best ranking Indian institute for the third time in a row. The institute has been an undefeated champion since 2019.

The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday released the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2021, the list for top colleges and universities under various categories.

The list was revealed through a webcast on the ranking platform’s official website – nirfindia.org.

IIT Madras emerged as the best institute in India (overall category) while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was the top university followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

IIT Madras created history by topping the ranking Indian institute list for the third consecutive time. The institute has been an undefeated champion since 2019. Meanwhile, IISc continued to obtain the second spot as it used to be the best-ranking institute in 2018 and before. In the six years of NIRF, no other institutes have got the top spots yet.

In the university category, IISc Bengaluru was the best-ranked varsity followed by JNU and BHU at the second and third spot, as per the National Institutional Ranking  Framework (NIRF) 2021.

The NIRF India Ranking 2021 was announced for eleven categories -- Overall, University, Management, College, Pharmacy, Medical, Engineering, Architecture, ARIIA (Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements), Law and Research Institutions.

The NIRF India Ranking parameters and the weighted averages adopted to derive the rankings differ for all the categories. The broad categories adopted to rank the colleges, universities and institutes include Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity and Peer Perception.

As many as 6,000 colleges and universities participated this year in the sixth edition of NIRF 2021 Rankings.
