Nepal has once again entered a state of political instability as Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli lost the confidence vote in Parliament.

Oli was able to manage only 93 votes out of 232. A total of 124 members voted against him. In the 271-member House, 15 lawmakers preferred to abstain from voting.

Under the new Constitution that came into force in September 2015, this was the first vote of confidence unsuccessfully sought by the first elected government.

After running the government for 38 months, Oli will now be submitting his resignation to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.

While moving the motion for a vote of confidence, the prime minister accused his detractors of targeting him for 'narrow and partisan' interests.

He also said it was unfortunate that a government that tirelessly worked for the country's development and nation-building is being targeted.

Opposition leaders, including Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepali Congress and Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda (Maoists), accused the prime minister of not containing the spread of Coronavirus in the country.
