PM Modi reviewed Covid-19 situation in North-East with CMs of eight states from the region via video conferencing.

The number of Covid-19 cases is rising. We need to take strict action to curb the situation at the micro level. We need to keep an eye on Covid variants, experts are studying them. We need to encourage people to follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, said PM Modi while addressing the CMs.

He emphasised that prevention and treatment are very important in such dynamic situation.

PM Modi’s warning comes at a time when several videos have emerged from the popular hill stations in North India where large crowds have been seen travelling while ignoring Covid protocols.

“It's a matter of concern that people are travelling without face masks at hill stations and market places,” said PM Modi on Tuesday.

To combat the possible third wave of Covid-19, we need to continue to accelerate the vaccination process, he further asserted.

Recently, the Cabinet has approved a new package of Rs 23,000 crore. This package will help every state in the northeast to strengthen its health infrastructure.

More than three out of every five districts that reported a test positivity rate of more than 10% over the past week are in the Northeast. Data tracked by the Union Health Ministry show that of the 58 districts that reported a positivity rate higher than 10% between July 5 and July 11, as many as 37 were from the Northeast.

Meanwhile, India reported 32,906 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, the lowest since March 16, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. The country’s active caseload has declined to 4.32 lakh. The recovery rate has increased to 97.28%, the ministry data stated.
