Today is National Doctor's Day which marks the birth and death anniversary of legendary physician and former West Bengal CM Bidhan Chandra Roy and the India Medical Association (IMA) has come out with facts that 800 doctors across the country died during Covid second wave.

As per reports, the association has termed that Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh doctors were the worst hit as more deaths were reported from these places.

While Delhi witnessed 128 doctors' deaths, Bihar reported 115 deaths and Uttar Pradesh reported 79 deaths.

“So far, we have the data of 800 doctors in our registry and initial observations indicate that a majority were yet to be fully vaccinated. Not many had got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine," Dr Jayesh Lele, secretary-general of IMA headquarters was quoted as saying as per reports.

Acknowledging their service and ensuring the safety of the rest of the doctors' community, the Indian Medical Association declared ‘Save the Saviours’ as the theme of this year’s National Doctors’ Day.

Doctors death in other states due to Covid:

During the first wave, it was Tamil Nadu and West Bengal that were the worst hit as far as doctors fraternity is concerned as out of 754 deaths majority were from these two states, however, this time the situation was better.

This year West Bengal reported 62 doctors' deaths, Tamil Nadu reported 51. Similarly, states like Rajasthan reported 44, Andhra Pradesh reported 42, Jharkhand and PM Modi's home state Gujarat both recorded 39 each, Telangana reported 37, Odisha reported 36 and Maharashtra  reported 23 deaths. The southern state, Kerala, which is ever ready to deal with challenges, reported 24 doctors' deaths.

Haryana reported 19 deaths and Assam that recently witnessed Assembly elections amidst Covid second wave reported 10 deaths.

According to the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), few doctors would have succumbed after both doses of vaccination at the same time, many of them recovered as they were vaccinated.

In honor of Dr BC Roy and other medicos who risk their lives to save others in a pandemic situation, the doctor's fraternity will hold different events like blood donation camp and extra hours in work today.
