Monsoon arrives early in Mumbai; waterlogging in many areas, trains halted

Monsoon showers arrived early in Mumbai, throwing key services out of gear in India's financial capital.

Waterlogging has been reported at Netaji Palkar Chowk, SV Road Baherambaug Junction, Sakkar Panchayat Chowk, Neelam Junction, Govandi, Hindamata Junction, Iqbal Kamani Junction, Dharavi Restaurant, Dharavi, Sion Junction and King Circle. 

Mumbai Local train services were hit on several routes on Wednesday morning. Mumbai local train services between Kurla and CSMT were halted as railway tracks were inundated between Kurla and Sion stations. 

The story seen year after year in Mumbai during Monsoons saw political leaders targeting Mumbai's civic body BMC for making lofty claims of crores of rupees being spent on ramping up infrastructure but offering very little on the ground in reality. 

On Tuesday, the BMC had claimed said that it had removed around 324,000 tonnes of silt from the city's drains. The civic body said that while it had planned to remove around 311,00 tonnes of silt, it had ended up clearing 324,000 tonnes. 

The BMC has deployed teams of tackle waterlogging in over 24 wards. Dewatering pumps have been installed in all the areas where water is being drained at low speeds, and adequate stock of diesel is being ensured from time to time to run the pumps.

According to the Met department's predictions, heavy rains are expected in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Konkan areas from June 9 to June 12

Dr Jayanta Sarkar, Deputy Director-General of IMD Mumbai, said that Monsoon had arrived in India's financial capital slightly ahead of the normal arrival date of June 10.

The Regional Meteorological Centre predicted severe weather warnings over the region during the next five days.
