Mango diplomacy: Bangladesh PM Shiekh Hasina sends 2600 kg mangoes to PM Modi, Mamata Banerjee
As a mark of friendship and goodwill, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent 2,000 kg of Bangladesh-origin seasonal mangoes (Haribhanga) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ramnath Kovind — 1,000 kg each.
Bangladesh's Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina has sent 2600 kg of Haribhanga mangoes to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in what is seen as Dhaka's ‘mango diplomacy’.
The Haribhanga variety of mango is grown in Bangladesh's Rangpur district. The mangoes were transported through the land border via the Benapole checkpoint.
The gift from Hasina comes at a time when there is growing disquiet on the Bangladeshi side over the halting of vaccine exports from India since late March.
The recipients of the mangoes also included West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee and Tripura CM Biplab Deb.
The mangoes reached Bangladeshi High Commission in Delhi on Monday and were dispatched to the Ministry of External Affairs. The mangoes reached Kolkata on Sunday via Benapole Petrapol land border and were later transported to Delhi via train.
According to a Zee Media report, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen was quoted saying, "We have very sweet and delicious mangoes and we produced plenty of them. We would like to share our happiness and of course, delicious mangoes with our neighbors and friends in this historic year of Mujib Borsho and Golden Jubilee year of our independence. Therefore, we sent mangoes as a gift to our neighbors and friends. Let them share our joys and happiness."
In March this year, Dhaka was the destination for Modi’s first and only foreign visit since the Covid-19 outbreak.
Mango diplomacy has been a tradition in Indian subcontinental politics. Former Pakistan Presidents Zia-ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf were among the dignitaries who had presented India with mangoes.
