Mumbai: In a horrific case of negligence, at least 12 kids were given hand sanitizer drops instead of the oral polio vaccine drops at a Primary Health Centre in a Maharashtra village.

All the children are below 5 years of age and they were admitted to a government hospital. Their condition is stable informed Yavatmal District Council Chief Executive Officer Shrikrishna Panchal.

Three officials including a health worker, doctor, and ASHA worker will be suspended in connection with the incident.

"An inquiry is underway and orders will be issued to suspend all the three healthcare workers," Panchal said.

Meanwhile, another official said the incident came to light when the village sarpanch checked the drops and found them to be hand sanitiser and not polio doses.

The incident took place on Sunday when over 2,000 small children aged 1-5 years had gathered along with their parents for the polio vaccination programme under the national immunization drive, launched in the morning.

According to officials, some of the kids were given oral drops of sanitizers instead of the polio drops after which many complained of nausea, cramps and started vomiting, sparking panic among the parents and health officials there.

All the children, aged between 1-5 years, were rushed to the Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
