The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered an FIR against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and others in connection with its probe into the allegations made by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.Ā

The CBI is reportedly conducting searches at various places, including Anil Deshmukh's residence.

The agency had quizzed Deshmukh after it grilled two of his personal assistants, Kundan Shinde and Sanjeev Palande.

Suspended assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze, who has been incarcerated pending investigation in connection with the recovery of the explosive-laden SUV near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's residence and the Mansukh Hiren death case, had dropped Deshmukh's name allegedly in connection with an extortion scam.

The CBI has been carrying out a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Deshmukh levelled by Param Bir Singh after he was removed from the Mumbai Police commissioner's post.

The allegations were reportedly corroborated by Vaze in the custody of the National Investigation Agency.

Param Bir Singh has alleged that Deshmukh called Vaze to his official residence and told him to extort Rs 100 crore a month from restaurants, pubs and other establishments in Mumbai.

He also alleged that Deshmukh was in touch with other officers for the same. The former top cop's serious allegations of malpractices had prompted the Bombay High Court to order a preliminary CBI probe against the former Maharashtra Home Minister.
