Calling the sedition case against filmmaker Aisha Sultana "false and unjustified", a number of BJP leaders in Lakshadweep, led by the general secretary Abdul Hameed Mullipuzha, have tendered their resignation from the party.

They submitted their resignations and wrote a letter to the party's chief, saying, “In a letter to BJP's Lakshadweep unit president Abdul Khader, the party leaders said at a time when BJP workers in Lakshadweep have been protesting against the "undemocratic actions" of UT administrator Praful Patel, "you have filed a false and unjustified complaint" against Sultana, and "ruining her family and her future".

The letter further stated that the actions taken by Patel were "anti-people, anti-democracy and causing extreme suffering among people".

"You also know that several BJP leaders of Lakshadweep have already spoken on the various wrongdoings of administrator and the district collector. It's just in the same way that Chetlat resident Aisha Sultana also shared her opinion in the media," the letter stated.

Filmmaker Aisha Sultana was named in a case of sedition and hate speech for her comments criticising Administrator Praful Khoda Patel's Covid handling.

They reminded Haji of having met Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the issue and "submitting a complaint". "You also know that several BJP leaders of Lakshadweep have already spoken on the various wrongdoings of the administrator and the district collector," the letter read.

Backing Aisha Sultana, the leaders further said: "It's just in the same manner, that Chetlat resident Aisha Sultana also shared her opinion in the media. Based on your complaint to the police, there has been a case registered against Aisha Sultana who, during a discussion, talked about from not having any Covid cases to rampant cases with the arrival of the present Administrator in Lakshadweep and his unscientific, irresponsible decisions."

"You have filed a false and unjustified complaint against Chetlath sister, and ruining her family and her future. We convey our strong objection and submit our primary membership from BJP," they said. The letter has been signed by BJP state secretary Abdul Hameed Mullipuzha among others.

Aisha Sultana had blamed Covid cases on the island on Praful Khoda Patel's decisions and remarked that the Centre had used "bioweapon" against Lakshadweep on a regional channel's news debate. The administrator was previously accused by protesters, as well as Lakshadweep Parliamentarian Mohammed Faizal, of doing away with quarantine protocols that were mandatory for people to enter the Union territory.

Following an uproar from the party workers, BJP's Lakshadweep unit president Abdul Khader filed a complaint with the Kavaratti police on Wednesday. In his complaint, the BJP leader alleged that Sultana's was an anti-national act, which tarnished the “patriotic image” of the central government.

Responding to the sedition case filed against her, Sultana wrote a Facebook post stating: “An FIR has been registered. However, only truth shall prevail. BJP leader who filed complaint is from Lakshadweep. As he continues to betray his homeland, I will continue fighting for it. Tomorrow, those who betrayed will be isolated."
