Kerala: ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan formally joins BJP just weeks ahead of Assembly polls
Earlier, Sreedharan had announced his decision to join BJP party to work for the state of Kerala.
FollowThiruvananthapuram: 'Metro Man' E Sreedharan formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Malappuram district of Kerala in the presence of Union Minister RK Singh on Thursday, just weeks ahead of the state Assembly elections.
“A great day for Kerala which look forward to politics based on development agenda. Welcome to BJP Metro Man,” the party’s Kerala handle tweeted.
Sreedharan, who was felicitated with a garland in the presence of a large number of BJP workers, said joining the party was one of the greatest moments of his life.
Credited with changing the face of public transport in India with his leadership in building the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro while he served as the managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Sreedharan has helmed several other metro projects in key cities.
Ahead of Assembly elections in Kerala, former Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan on February 18 announced that he will join the BJP.
"If BJP comes to power in Kerala, I am ready to become the chief minister. The party has not asked me till now as it is too premature. But if BJP asks me, I am willing to take up the post and show how a state can be run efficiently like we are running DMRC," Sreedharan had told ANI earlier.
The 88-year-old technocrat said that his main aim is to bring BJP to power in Kerala and once that happens he will focus mainly on infrastructure development and will bring industry to the state.
The BJP has just one MLA in the 140-strong Kerala Assembly. The Congress has downplayed his entry in the BJP.
The Assembly elections in Kerala are likely between April-May this year.
