The Kerala government has sought Ministry of External Affairs intervention in bringing back at least 41 people from the state stranded in Kabul.

The Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) has written to the Ministry of External Affairs at the order of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for the evacuation of 41 Malayalees stranded in Afghanistan.

“Some of the messages received here stated that Taliban are verifying the identity of the stranded Indians and are taking away their passports,” the letter read.

The department said the stranded persons awaiting to return home are either associated with private firms in Kabul or with local offices of international organisations.

Earlier on Tuesday, IAF plane from Afghanistan, carrying 130 diplomats and around 20 Indian citizens, landed at Jamnagar airbase.

At the time of filing this report, The C-17 aircraft touched down at the Hindon airbase near Delhi after refuelling in Jamnagar airbase in Gujarat.

The aircraft had flown to Kabul to bring back Indian personnel home as part of the emergency evacuation because of the tense situation in the Afghan capital after the Taliban seized power.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday had said that it was monitoring the situation “on a constant basis at high levels” and is “in constant touch with the representatives of Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities”.
