Thiruvananthapuram: Amid sharp rise in coronavirus cases in Kerala, the state will be under night curfew from 10 pm to 6 am starting today (Monday).

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had announced the decision on Saturday after facing flak from opposition and public health experts for alleged poor Covid-19 management in the state.

Two days ago, the Centre suggested that the state government should explore the possibility of enforcing night curfew in areas of high positivity.

"In areas where the weekly infection population ratio is above seven per cent, the government has decided to implement a lockdown. From next week, there will be a night curfew from 10 pm to 6 am. Night curfew has already been issued for tomorrow," Vijayan said at a press conference.

The Kerala government has also issued additional Covid guidelines, stating special intensified stringent lockdowns will be enforced in the urban wards and panchayats with critical spread where WIPR (weekly infection population ratio) is above 7.

The Chief Minister also stated that the state plans to vaccinate everyone above 18 years of age with the first dose of vaccine by the end of September.

In a letter to the Kerala chief secretary on Friday, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said the state has witnessed a sustained and significant transmission of Covid-19 since July.

Fresh Covid-19 cases crossed the 30,000-mark for the sixth consecutive day in the state on Monday. Since July 27, after restrictions were relaxed in the state for a few days on account of two festivals, the state has been recording more than or close to 20,000 cases almost every day.

CM Vijayan has called a meeting on September 1 to cobble together a roadmap for Covid-19 mitigation. The conference would include top virologists, public health experts, and administrators.
