Thiruvananthapuram: In view of the rising Covid cases in Kerala, a complete lockdown will be observed in the state on July 31 and August 1 (Saturday and Sunday). This came a day after the number of daily Covid-19 cases in Kerala crossed 20,000 for the second successive day on Wednesday

The fresh infections increased the overall caseload to 33,27,301, while the fatality count mounted to 16,457. As per the July 28 figures, Kerala had more than 50% of the overall Covid-19 cases across the country. As per the Union health ministry data released on Thursday morning, India logged 43,654 new cases in a span of 24 hours.

The government is sending a 6-member team to Kerala headed by Dr SK Singh, Director, National Centre for Disease Control. The team will reach Kerala on July 30 and visit a few districts. As a large number of Covid cases are still being reported in Kerala, the team will aid the state’s ongoing efforts in Covid management, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.

Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote to Kerala government on "super spreader events" observed in the state recently. The Health Secretary mentioned that Covid guidelines need to be followed properly, "Compliance with mass/social gatherings guidelines need to be enforced strictly", sources said.

Meanwhile, at least two-thirds of the population surveyed in 11 states were found to have developed coronavirus antibodies, according to the findings of a serosurvey by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) done between June 14 and July 6.

Some of the worst affected districts in the state are Malappuram (3931), Thrissur (3005), Kozhikode (2400), Ernakulam (2397), Palakkad (1649), Kollam (1462), Alappuzha (1461), Kannur (1179), Thiruvananthapuram (1101) and Kottayam (1067).
