Bengaluru: While the State government is expected to take a call on extending the lockdown in the next couple of days, Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai indicated that the police and the Home Department will go for stricter implementation of lockdown measures including seizure of vehicles in the upcoming days.

He further told reporters in Bengaluru, "In the coming days the measures taken by the police or home department like seizures of vehicles of those indulging in unnecessary movement among others, will be made more effectively."

The government had initially announced restrictions from April 27 till May 12, but later imposed a complete lockdown from May 10 to 24, following an increase in Covid-19 cases. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has said a decision on extending the lockdown would be taken on May 23.

Following a spike in Covid cases in rural areas, lockdown measures are being strictly implemented in the districts, but people continue to flout rules, Bommai pointed out. He cited an instance of five people going on a motorcycle to attend a marriage in Yadagir district before police stopped them.

"...for instance, in Yadgir there are reports about five people going on a motorcycle to attend a marriage, what should we say, so people will have to cooperate with the police to make the lockdown successful," he added.

When the situation is serious, and the virus is spreading rapidly, it is necessary to take strict action. People should understand the seriousness of the lockdown and cooperate with us,” he said.

Bommai said the Chief Minister will announce a decision on the Karnataka lockdown on May 23.
