With the technical expert committee in favour of reopening primary schools in districts where the cases are below 2% positivity rate, the Karnataka government has decided to reopen schools for class 6 to 8.

The experts also had given green signal to reopen schools for class 6 to 8 students from September 6 onwards.

The minister also said that students coming from Kerala will have to undergo institutional quarantine and must get an RT-PCR test before attending schools.

In taluks where the positivity is less than 2%, schools will be reopened. This apart the test done on 6,472 students in 2,572 gram panchayat levels has shown only 14 students testing positive and hence this decision of reopening higher primary schools was taken.

From one month the students will be asked to come five days a week and students will be split batch-wise and will be allowed on alternate days. The weekend will be used to sanitize the institutions.

Based on the committee's advice, the government reopened schools for class 9 to 12 standard from August 23, however, the attendance in many schools is still a worrying trend.

The schools were told to follow Covid protocols from wearing masks, temperature checking, maintaining social distance and holding classes on alternate days for class 9 to 12 students.

The CM and his team of ministers, Dr K Sudhakar, R Ashoka, BC Nagesh along with Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar, DG Praveen Sood and BBMP Commissioner Gaurab Gupta attended the meeting to discuss the feedback given by the technical experts committee.

The educational institutions were shut on March 24, 2020, and since then the educational institutions, especially primary and lower primary, have remained closed due to the pandemic.

As per data, there are over 77,000 schools, 1.03 crore students and 3 lakh teachers are in the Department of Primary and Secondary Education ambit.

The government has already issued a circular a few weeks ago stating that the school and college teaching and non-teaching staff should get at least one dose of Covid vaccination.

Initially, higher education classes were opened after students above 18 years had the option to get the vaccination as the health ministry had ordered vaccination for those above 18 years.

And from August 23 schools and PU colleges were opened, however, attendance was not compulsory.

As far as the Covid cases are concerned, the state reported 1,262 cases and 17 deaths. Bengaluru tops the list with 361 cases and 6 deaths and Kerala-Karnataka border district Dakshina Kannada reported 202 cases and 3 deaths.
