The Karnataka government Tuesday decided to continue classes and to hold examinations as scheduled in colleges and universities in the state amid the possibility of a second wave of Covid-19 cases.

“The government of Karnataka has decided to not shut down the educational institutes in the states and conduct regular offline classes in colleges after reviewing the current Covid-19 situation,” said Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan.

"We discussed the possible impact of the second wave of Covid-19 on the academic activities. The same would be communicated to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa," he said in a statement, without elaborating.

The Deputy CM also said that increased vigilance will be put in place in the universities to ensure strict adherence to SOPs issued by the state government.

The Deputy CM said that the decision was arrived at after detailed deliberations with the senior officials of the Higher Education department. A request has been put in to the Additional Chief Secretary for hostels working under the department of social welfare and backward classes to keep functioning, he added.

Further, Ashwathnarayan, in a video statement requested students and other stakeholders of the system not to pay heed to rumours regarding government decisions, “Let me also humbly request our students to follow all Covid-19 norms,” he added.

Regular classes in colleges in the state had resumed in November last year after the institutions remained shut for six months due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Karnataka is witnessing a steady rise in fresh Covid-19 cases of late with the daily infections crossing the 2,000 mark on Tuesday after a gap of over three months, due to which many parents are wary of sending their wards to institutes for offline classes.
