Bengaluru: With Karnataka clocking over 45,000 Covid cases daily in the past week, the BJP government has moved to impose a total lockdown in the state — the “last resort” prescribed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tackle the surge in his address to the nation two weeks ago.

In an order issued on Friday, the BS Yediyurappa government said the lockdown will be from 6 am on May 10 to 6 am on May 24.

“There will be no movement of people allowed in this period. There will be a window of four hours between 6 am and 10 am for people to buy essential items. There will be no industrial activity but in-situ construction is allowed,” Yediyurappa said.

Here is what will be open and what stays closed:

· Road repair work and cargo vehicles can operate during the lockdown.

· Hotels, restaurants and eateries will be permitted to operate kitchens for take away and home delivery of food items only.

· Only takeaway is allowed from standalone liquor shops and outlets, from 6 am to 10am.

· Shops and other commercial units like hotels, pubs, bars and industries that are not directly related to providing essential services will have to pull down their shutters.

· Schools, colleges, educational and coaching institutions will remain closed. Online and distance learning will continue.

· All cinema halls, shopping malls, gymnasiums, sports complexes, stadia, playgrounds, swimming pools, parks, entertainment parks, clubs, theatres, bars and auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will remain shut.

· No inter-district travel will be allowed during the lockdown period, except for essential services.

Karnataka has witnessed a massive Covid surge since the last week of March, and recorded over 50,000 positive cases on May 5 with 346 deaths. Out of the 50,112 positive cases and 346 deaths on May 5, Bengaluru city recorded 23,106 cases and 161 deaths.
