Three persons arrested with accusations of assaulting a man in Kanpur and forcing him to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ were released on bail by a local court, police said on Friday.

A video of the incident shows a Muslim e-rickshaw driver Afsar Ahmad’s daughter clinging to him and pleading with the accused to spare him. The video had gone viral.

Accusing Ahmad of raising anti-national slogans, one of the videos shows some men wearing saffron scarves assaulting him.

The police intervened even as Ahmad and his daughter were seen pleading and rescued them before being taken to the police station.

According to a report on The Indian Express, Govindnagar ACP Vikas Kumar Pandey was quoted saying, “They (accused) had been booked under IPC sections that have less than seven years of punishment and as per court guidelines, people accused under such sections should be granted bail. The bail was granted by a local court and we released them after receiving the orders.”

The police have filed an FIR against five named persons and eight to 10 unidentified persons for rioting, criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt, The Hindu reported. The three arrested accused were identified as Ajay, Rahul Kumar and Aman Gupta.

According to a NDTV report, the incident took place 500 metres from an intersection where Bajrang Dal held a meeting, where they claimed Muslims in the area were trying to convert a Hindu girl in their locality. The assault reportedly took place just after the meeting.

After the arrest, a mob of Bajrang Dal workers sat on a protest outside the DCP office in Kanpur and left only after “assurances” from the police about a fair investigation. The mob however said they would return if those arrested were not released soon.
