Jammu and Kashmir: Top Hizbul commander gunned down in Handwara encounter

FollowSrinagar: In a big success for the security forces, one of the oldest top commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen, Mehrazuddin Halwai was gunned down during an encounter in Handwara district of North Kashmir on Wednesday morning.
"One of the oldest & top-commander of Hizbul Mujahideen terror-outfit Mehrazuddin Halwai alias Ubaid got neutralised in Handwara encounter. He was involved in several terror crimes," said IGP Kashmir.
Security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation at Pazipora-Renan in the Handwara area of the district Wednesday morning following information about the presence of militants there, the police said. The operation turned into an encounter after the security forces were fired upon.
Halwai was killed in retaliatory action by the security personnel, the police added.
The encounter began at Pazipora- Renan area of Kralgund in Handwara during the wee hours on Wednesday and security forces from the Jammu and Kashmir police, army, and CRPF personnel were on the job.
