Is Maharashtra headed for mid-term polls?

According to a report in the New Indian Express, political pundits have expressed surprise over Maharashtra NCP president and state cabinet minister Jayant Patil holding statewide campaign since the last several days and addressing rallies of his party workers besides also resolving issues related to his irrigation portfolio.

The Congress and the Shiv Sena -- the two other allies in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi -- are tight-lipped about any such possibility emerging.

The report, however, cited NCP sources as saying that each of the alliance partners is "scrambling to increase vote share".

There have signs of fissures in the alliance recently.

Assembly Speaker Nana Patole, who is the front runner for the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee post, last week said that his party was working to establish the next government in Maharashtra on its own.

Even though the alliance partners chose to ignore the statement, the fact that the statement came from a senior Congress leader from the Vidarbha region can't just be brushed away.

To recall, the allies had been at loggerheads till some weeks back over the Shiv Sena's moves to rename Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar.
