India confers Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with Gandhi Peace Prize 2020
The award is given to individuals and institutions for their contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.
FollowNew Delhi: The Government of India on Monday conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize 2020 on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, while for the year 2019, it's conferred on late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, the Ministry of Culture said.
The Ministry of Culture unanimously decided to select his name for recognition of his outstanding contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violent and other Gandhian methods.
The jury for Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and comprises of two ex-officio members, namely the Chief Justice of India and Leader of the single largest Opposition Party in Lok Sabha. Two eminent members are also part of the Jury, namely Shri Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and Shri Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder of Sulabh International Social Service Organization.
Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by the Government of India since 1995, the 125th Birth Anniversary commemoration year of Mahatma Gandhi. The award is given to individuals and institutions for their contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Dhaka on March 26 to attend celebrations of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Rahman was the first President and later the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was assassinated on August 15, 1975. Rahman is known as the "Father of the Nation" or simply "Mujib" in Bangladesh.
