Kinnaur landslide: 10 dead, 14 rescued, some still feared missing

At least 10 bodies have been recovered while some people are still feared missing after a landslide hit vehicles at the Reckong Peo-Shimla highway in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.

Sources said 14 people were evacuatedĀ from the rubble by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and other rescuers.

Among the vehicles that were impacted by the landslide included a Himachal Pradesh road transport corporation bus, a carĀ and a truck.

Around 300 personnel drawn from the 43rd, 17th and 19th battalions of the ITBP are at the landslide site near Nugulsari.

Initial reports said four vehicles were hit by the landslideĀ 

After clearing the debris on the road using earthmovers, only one panel of the bus was found in the rubble.Ā 

According to sources, there was no trace of the passengers and the rest of the bus till now.Ā 

ITBP teams have now gone towards the river bed from multiple directions to find the bus, sources added.Ā

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said the police and local administration are already engaged in rescue operations. The chief minister, however, did not confirm the number of people affected by the landslide.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister regarding the situation and assured all possible support in the ongoing rescue operations.
