Himachal Pradesh BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma found dead at Delhi residence, suicide suspected

BJP MP from Himachal Ram Swaroop Sharma was found dead at his Delhi residence on Wednesday morning. Police is suspecting suicide as the cause of death.

Sharma's body was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his flat in Gomti Apartments near RML Hospital. The cause of suicide is not known and police have launched an investigation into the matter.

"He was found hanging inside his room, which was locked from inside. No suicide note has been found," a police official said.

His body has been sent for postmortem. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party cancelled its Parliamentary Party meeting, scheduled for this morning, after learning about Sharma’s death.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to Twitter to express his condolences. "I am deeply distressed by the sudden demise of BJP MP Shri Ram Swaroop Sharma from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. I express my condolences to his family in this hour of grief and pray to God for peace of the departed soul," Shah tweeted.

Born at Jalpehar village in Mandi district on in 1958, Sharma was a two-time MP. He was first elected to the Parliament in 2014. He was re-elected from Mandi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Ram Swaroop Sharma was a member of the Standing Committee on External Affairs and the Consultative Committee, Ministry of External Affairs.
