Ten days after welcoming the talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Kashmir and terming it as positive, the Gupkar alliance has taken a U-turn and said it is disappointed with the outcome of the meeting.

In a statement, the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration or Gupkar alliance expressed disappointment at the outcome of the Delhi meeting with the Prime Minister, especially with regard to the absence of substantial Confidence Building Measures like releasing political and other prisoners.

Going back on its earlier promise, members of the Gupkar alliance have now set a pre-condition that any assembly election must be held only after the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

The June 24 meeting at PM's residence

In the June 24 meeting, the Prime Minister had stressed that our priority is to strengthen grassroots democracy in J&K.

He added that Delimitation has to happen at a quick pace so that polls can happen and J&K gets an elected government that gives strength to J&K's development trajectory.

During the meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had reiterated that the delimitation exercise and peaceful elections are important milestones in restoring statehood as promised in Parliament.

The June 24 meeting was the first political engagement since the region was stripped of its semi-autonomous status and statehood on August 5, 2019.
