Results for 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayat and 231 taluka panchayat have started pouring in with the BJP gaining a clear lead in the initial trends. Results for some seats across the municipalities and panchayats have been declared and the majority of the seats have been won by the saffron party so far.

Out of 231 taluka panchayats, BJP is leading in 73, Congress in 11 and others in 3. Out of 31 district panchayats, BJP leads in 28. In 81 municipalities BJP leading in 60, Congress in 6 and others in 1.

The saffron party hopes to continue its good run in local body polls held over the last few weeks in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, ahead of elections due next year.

After a stupendous performance in the civic body elections a week ago, winning 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation, the Aam Aadmi Party has now said that it has won 24 seats in the local body polls.

As per the State Election Commission, 8,235 seats are up for grabs in the recently held Gujarat Municipality elections. In total there were 8,474 seats, however, candidates were elected unopposed on 237 seats and no one submitted forms for two.

The polling took place on Sunday with municipalities recording a voter turnout of 58.82%, while the figure was 65.80% for the district panchayats and 66.60% for taluka panchayats. Re-polling was held during the day in a booth in Ghodiya in Jhalod taluka of Dahod district after two EVMs were damaged during Sunday's polling by three people. The booth recorded around 50 per cent turnout during the re-poll.
